Demand declines for CBD cameras

IT started with a bang and a demand from Shoalhaven City councillors that Nowra’s CBD CCTV cameras be turned on no matter what. The only problem is that it hasn’t reduced crime in the CBD and the police are making fewer and fewer applications for footage.According to council’s CCTV reviews, in the first five months of operation (November 2010 to March 2011) there were 11 applications for footage. The following quarter there were six applications, then five and in the last quarter of 2011 there were three applications. In other words, a crime hot spot that is supposed to be notorious for assaults, malicious damage and other property offences is generating one application for footage per month.Of course the diehards will claim even one application is worth it if it helps catch these criminals. The only problem is it doesn’t because the footage is of such poor quality you can’t tell who the offender is.A.
