Punishment is over the top

I AM probably one of the last to write to a local paper but I feel compelled to alert other unsuspecting people to the vagaries of Shoalhaven City Council.Last week I received three letters, one from Member for Gilmore Joanna Gash and one from Member for South Coast Shelly Hancock welcoming me to the South Coast. The third letter was from Shoalhaven City Council, a hefty fine for walking my neighbour’s dog, on the lead, on Narrawallee Beach. The “offence” took place on Tuesday morning on a deserted beach, save for me, the dog, two fishermen and one predatory ranger.I begrudgingly paid the $330 fine, yes, $330!The punishment far outweighs the “crime”.As a comparison, the penalty for using a mobile while driving carries a $265 fine. I was amazed that my fine was far in excess of this.Admittedly, I was in the wrong but surely some sort of discretion on the part of the ranger/council would be appropriate.Welcome to the South Coast!L.
