Berry grapples with yet another road issue

A PROPOSAL to close Victoria Street in Berry to traffic from the Princes Highway was discussed at a community forum last Thursday. The residential street is used by locals and visitors as an alternative route to the highway. The meeting at the Berry Courthouse discussed the possibility of closing access to the highway to combat a number of issues raised by residents in response to the eventual construction of the Berry bypass.Local resident James Robinson said the closure of Victoria Street could resolve a range of problems.“The issues include the future use of Mark Radium Park, the role that Queen Street plays in the eventual bypass, whether or not Queen Street is to be the main point of access to the town and to maximise street safety.”Mr Robinson said residents had expressed concerns about pedestrian safety on Victoria Street.“A working group is in the process of being formed which will try and come up with a resolution that the majority of people are happy with,” said Mr Robinson.Berry resident Christine Bramley, who attended the meeting, is against the closure, saying that it would, “cause major problems”.“It will affect everyone on the southern side of Queen Street heading into Nowra, which includes all the nursing homes. Everyone will have to backtrack onto George Street and travel down, basically doing a circle.”Mrs Bramley said closing the street would significantly increase traffic on surrounding streets and add more congestion to an already busy highway.“The quantity of cars would be above the recommended limits for the four surrounding streets,” said said.Another resident Putch Lyle said that access to the road was regularly used by travellers who stopped at Mark Radium Park off the highway.“The access now is used by people with caravans or their dogs and it’s lovely for them. It has always been a park for tourists.”Mrs Lyle said that traffic would significantly increase on George and Edward streets, creating a congestion spot for people wanting to get onto the highway.“It will create terrible congestion with only one access. If there was an accident on Queen Street all access to the highway would be cut off.”This story Administrator ready to work first appeared on Nanjing Night Net.
